Jenna Ortega wants Wednesday Season 2 to include more horror elements and ditch the romance that feels out of place in the series.
Jenna Ortega is taking the world by storm after dazzling generations of Addams Family fans with Tim Burton’s Wednesday and going a second round with Ghostface for Scream VI. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ortega confirmed the writers for Wednesday are busy penning the sophomore season of Netflix’s Gothic drama. Ortega also has ideas about Wednesday Season 2, including the show’s approach towards horror and romance.
I think we want the horror aspect to be a bit more intense and then let Wednesday get out of the romantic situation and let her be her individual and fight her own crime,” Ortega said to a giddy Fallon.
I am open to the possibility of more horror in the next season. The first season was dominated by the romance between Wednesday, Tyler Galpin, Xavier Thorpe. The show’s strongest feature is still the supernatural horror angle. Burton is an expert at creating threatening and memorable characters. Hopefully, Wednesday Season 2 will let him off the leash and tap into nightmares he’s been holding onto for years. After all, what’s The Addams Family without creepy crawlies, oozing bog monsters, and decaying relatives?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJzm8RFQ8bAAccording to reports, Ortega is fearless in defying the writing team when she feels the dialogue isn’t true to her character. Ortega spoke on the Armchair Expert podcast to reveal that parts of the script were not reflected in Wednesday’s reactions to the world. Ortega would often alter dialogue without consulting the writers.
"When I read the entire series I realized, Oh, this is for young audiences',"
Ortega said.
“When I signed up for the show, I didn’t have all the scripts. It was going to be darker. It wasn’t… I was unsure what the tone would be or how the score would sound.”When Ortega was asked about her changing Wednesday’s dialogue, Ortega replied that she had never had to “Wednesday” more than on Wednesday. It was all not right for her character. Is it possible for her to be in a love triangle with someone? It made no sense. She was talking about a dress she had to wear to school dance, and she said that she loved it. Ugh, that’s horrible. I can’t believe I said that. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I’d have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.”While Ortega admits she can be a handful, she strikes me as an actress who gets shit done. If she wants more horror in
Wednesday
Season 2, I won’t put it past her to get it done.
Do you hope Wednesday Season 2 leans harder into horror? What do you think of Ortega changing Wednesday’s dialogue, without speaking to the writing team? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
