HBO cancels Avenue 5 after two seasons

Date:

HBO has cancelled Avenue 5, the sci-fi comedy from Veep creator Armando Iannucci starring Hugh Laurie, after two seasons.

Avenue 5 will be headed back to Earth as it’s been confirmed that HBO has officially cancelled the sci-fi comedy series from Veep creator Armando Iannucci.

The series followed the crew of a luxury space cruise ship as it embarked on an eight-week trip through the solar system, only for the accidental death of the Chief Engineer to throw them off course and years away from home. “Going into space with Armando Iannucci was an amazing journey. A spokeswoman for HBO said that while we won’t be continuing with Avenue 50, we look forward many more adventures together,.

10Avenue 510 starred Hugh Laurie and Zach Woods. The series was renewed by HBO for a second season in a matter of months. However, the pandemic caused production to be delayed by more than a decade. The second season arrived almost three years after the original. So, the cancellation news doesn’t really come as a surprise, especially as Hugh Laurie has moved on to Apple TV+’s Tehran and Armando Iannucci is working on The Franchise with Sam Mendes, a new comedy series that “takes a wry look at superhero movie-making.” Production on the pilot is expected to kick off this spring.

Our own Alex Maidy reviewed Avenue 5 upon its premiere over three years ago, and while he enjoyed the series, it didn’t quite reach Veep levels of comedy. Maidy stated that Avenue 5 lacks the same fast-paced delivery of jokes as Veep. Avenue 5 is not as funny as Veep’s. It’s humor was so fast-paced and vulgar that it felt unscripted. After the initial set-up of the series is done, Avenue 5 begins to speed up its jokes with the third episode really showing the story’s potential. Although there is enough humor to please scifi fans, and enough scatalogical jokes to warrant this series being aired on HBO, it doesn’t quite reach the potential that Armando Iannucci would have expected. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good, it just isn’t good enough quite yet but it certainly has the potential to be a break out hit.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here. Are you sad to see Avenue 5
