After rumors that Constantine 2 had been cancelled, a Warner Bros. spokesperson has confirmed that the movie is still in the works.
We learned last year that Warner Bros. was developing a long-belated sequel to Constantine, but that was a very different time. James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have taken over DC Studios, have caused the cancellation of several projects that don’t fit in the new universe. Rumours circulated last week that Constantine2 would be similarly canceled, but thankfully this is not the case.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson reached to Entertainment Weekly for confirmation that Constantine2 has not been cancelled. That said, little has been heard about the Constantine sequel, but as the new DC Universe slate includes a Swamp Thing movie, it stands to reason that James Gunn isn’t avoiding the darker aspects of the franchise.
Constantine 210 will see Keanu Reeves return to the role of the cynical exorcist/demonologist. Francis Lawrence, the original director of the film, will also be returning to direct the sequel. Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) will script the Constantine sequel and will also produce the through his Weed Road Pictures banner alongside Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella. The original Constantine movie, which was released in 2005, grossed a respectable $230.9million on a budget of $70-100,000,000. The movie found Constantine helping an LAPD detective (Rachel Weisz) prove that her sister’s death wasn’t a suicide, but was, in fact, something much more sinister.
Francis Lawrence has teased that he would like to develop Constantine 2 with an R-rating in mind. “One thing I loved about the first movie was that we followed Warner Bros.’ guidelines to make a PG-13 movie. “But, the ratings board gave us an R based on their gray zone of intensity. My biggest regret was that we have an R-rated film that is actually a PG-13 movie. If I had to make an R-rated movie, I would have made it. I would have made it more scary and violent, and made it an R-rated movie. The idea is this time, at least for me, is to really go at it and make a real R-rated Constantine which is, I think, what people always wanted originally, not the PG-13 version that just happens to get an R.“Aside from Keanu Reeves, Matt Ryan has played the character most frequently; first in his own live-action TV series as well as The CW’s Arrowverse. He also voiced Constantine on several animated DC projects like
Justice league Dark10, Constantine City of Demons10, Justice league Dark: Apololips War10 and Harley quin. Jenna Coleman played Johanna Constantine, a female version of Constantine in Netflix’s The Sandman10 series. Anything could happen moving forward, but for now, Constantine 2 still lives.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ9Jf-l7sXw
